Modesty, Let's Talk About It

I know we've all had that lecture before.
"You need to wear longer shorts."
"Put some leggings on!"
"Go change that outfit."
"You're not going out of the house like that."

Most of the time our answer is, "but everyone else is wearing it," or "it's in style." It's so hard shopping for modest clothing as a girl, I know. I've wandered around Forever 21 trying to find something that will at least cover my belly button. Even though it's hard to find, it's worth it. Trust me, do not conform to the world's average. Because the world's average is wearing party clothes and attracting sin wherever you go.

The world says, "wear what you want to wear, nobody cares," "if you have the body, show it off," and "the more skin you show, the tighter your clothes are, the more guys will chase after you."
Don't believe those lies. People do care, they watch and see what you do every day, especially Christians. No matter your body type, you can be as fashionable and modest as anyone else. If you think that showing more skin is going to get your dream guy to come to talk to you, you might need to rethink your version of Prince Charming. (Check out my definition of Prince Charming!)

Let's talk about Modesty.

As a girl, we have very different bodies compared to guys. So, speaking with common sense, shouldn't we dress differently than they do?

“A woman is not to wear male clothing, and a man is not to put on a woman’s garment, for everyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord your God."
Deuteronomy 22:5

When you get dressed for the day, did you ever stop to think that you are living sanctuary? It doesn't matter if we are going to church or not if Christ is living inside of us we should dress with honor and dignity.

"Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. "1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Christ has done a lot for us. Shouldn't we take care of the gift we've been given?

What do you think modesty looks like?

Is it wearing long denim skirts? Is it having your hair up in a bun? Is it not being able to wear tank tops?

Girls, modesty is not just for propriety sake. Being modest is a form of beauty.

Beauty? Um, Anna, have you seen the latest "modesty trends?" Yes, I have and I think they are more flattering than the average short-shorts.

Here are some examples of modest clothing. Honestly, most of those outfits are saved on my Pinterest boards. Who else looks on Pinterest for outfit inspo?

You can't say that modesty is ugly when looking at some of those outfits.

Modesty isn't just about what you wear either.
What we choose to wear should resemble what our true character is on the inside.

"[Beauty] should consist of what is inside the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes."
1 Peter 3:4

Being modest is wearing the inside out.

Are you showing Christ in your attitude? Are you reflecting Him on the outside? I pray that this stirs your heart as it does mine. Let's strive to be the example of true beauty to the other girls that look up to us. Because, you may not realize this, but little eyes watch you. Whether you are in school, church, the store; you are the image they see and grow up to be.
